India’s first indigenous ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip launched | ISRO’s big achievement, PM Modi called it – ‘Digital Diamond’

ISRO has launched India’s first indigenous 32-bit ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip at Semicon India 2025. In this article, we will know about its features, temperature capability, usage and India’s progress in semiconductor technology.

'Vikram' microprocessor chip

India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip has been launched at the Semicon India 2025 event. This advanced microprocessor chip has been developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) and is specially designed for space missions.

During the launch at the Semicon India 2025 event, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav handed over the ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On this occasion, PM Modi said that “Earlier oil was called black gold, but in today’s digital age, chips are the new digital diamonds.

‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip capable of working up to 125°C.

‘Vikram’ microprocessor is India’s first indigenous 32-bit microprocessor, which has been completely designed and developed in the country. This chip is so robust that it performs better even in extreme temperatures and difficult conditions. It has been specially designed for space missions and can work successfully in temperatures ranging from -55°C to +125°C.

This state-of-the-art chip has been jointly developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) and Semiconductor Lab (SCL). It is based on 180 nanometer CMOS technology, which makes it high-performance and energy-efficient.

The first successful test of ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip was conducted on PSLV Orbital Experimental Module during PSLV-C60 mission (POEM-4). In this test, the chip powered the mission management computer and was completely successful. This achievement proves that the ‘Vikram’ chip is a reliable and powerful technology for future Indian space missions.

Features of ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip – India’s first indigenous 32-bit microprocessor technology.

The ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip is India’s first indigenous 32-bit chip, specially designed for space missions and scientific research. Some of its main features are as follows:

  • 32-bit advanced architecture

The ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip is based on 32-bit general-purpose architecture, which is much more advanced and powerful than the earlier 16-bit Vikram 1601 chip.

  • 64-bit floating-point operations

The ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip supports 64-bit floating-point operations, which is very useful for complex calculations and scientific research. It is very important. It is especially used for accurate data processing in space missions.

  • Indigenous Software Tools

All the software tools like compiler, assembler, linker, simulator and Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for the ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip have been completely developed indigenously by ISRO.

Kalpana 3201 microprocessor and new indigenous technologies launched.

Along with the ‘Vikram’ 32-bit microprocessor, four more indigenous electronic devices were also introduced at the Semicon India 2025 event, which will help in making the avionics systems of launch vehicles more compact, powerful and efficient.

These devices include.

  • Reconfigurable Data Acquisition System – for better data collection
  • Relay Driver IC – for high-performance circuit control
  • Multi-Channel Low Drop-Out Regulator IC – to increase energy efficiency

Apart from this, another called Kalpana 3201 The 32-bit SPARC V8 RISC microprocessor has also been introduced. This processor is fully compatible with open-source tools, which will greatly help in space technology, scientific research and high-performance computing in the future.

PM Modi launches Semicon India 2025, India will become a global semiconductor hub.

The Semicon India 2025 event was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 2 September 2025 at Yashobhoomi in Delhi. This three-day event (2 to 4 September 2025) is proving to be historic for India’s semiconductor industry.

In this international event,

  • 350+ exhibitors
  • More than 2,500 delegates
  • 150 global speakers from 33 countries

participated, the main objective of this event is to make India a global hub of semiconductor design, manufacturing and technology development. Through Semicon India 2025, India will become the world’s most is taking major steps towards emerging as a fast-growing semiconductor economy.

PM Modi said – Chips are the new digital diamonds.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during Semicon India 2025, “Earlier oil was called black gold, but in today’s digital age, chips are the new digital diamonds.”

Modi said that currently the value of the global semiconductor market is $ 600 billion, which is on its way to crossing $ 1 trillion in the coming years. He said that India is moving rapidly towards gaining a bigger share in this market.

PM Modi also emphasized that India is no longer limited to just back-end operations but is moving towards becoming a global leader in advanced semiconductor design and manufacturing with the vision of “Design in India, Made in India”.

Why is the ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip important for India?

Semiconductor chips have become extremely important in every sector like healthcare, transport, communication, defense and space technology in today’s digital age. These chips not only accelerate technological development but also play an important role in ensuring economic security and strategic independence.

With the launch of the ‘Vikram’ microprocessor chip 32-bit indigenous microprocessor chip, India is now taking a big step towards reducing dependence on foreign chips. This chip will further strengthen India’s self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat), especially in sensitive sectors like space missions and defense sector.
